Here's some information you may not want to know, but should.
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has an online risk assessment tool it says can "predict a person's chance of having a heart attack in the next 10 years." To use the tool, you will need to know your total cholesterol and your HDL cholesterol numbers. HDL — the so-called "good" cholesterol — is believed to be protective against heart disease, so the higher that number, the better off you are. You also will have to enter your systolic blood pressure number. Systolic is the first number on your blood pressure readings, so if your blood pressure is, say, 130/80, enter 130.
The institute says the tool is designed for adults who have not been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes.
