Pictures of puppies make popular wall calendars. But those young dogs won't teach you any new tricks.

Residents of the Gurwin Jewish-Fay J. Lindner assisted living community in Commack have put together a 2013 calendar for the ages. Twelve residents, ages 82-101, posed for the calendar, titled "From Generation to Generation" (or "L'dor v'dor" in Hebrew).

Each page includes words of wisdom and life lessons from the Gurwin residents. For example, 87-year-old David Robinson, a World War II vet and the calendar's "Mr. April," passes along his secret of how to survive no matter how tough the times: Keep a positive outlook and "Smile!"

The calendar costs $12.95. It is available at Book Revue in Huntington or directly from Gurwin. For information, call 631-715-8268 or email lindnerresidences@gurwin.org.
