Hospital admissions on weekends are riskier

Lazy summer weekends are a good time to put off a lot of things, and if you have a choice, going to the hospital on a weekend should be on that list.

A review of worldwide hospital data covering more than 55 million people over several years found that patients admitted to hospitals on weekends have between a 15 and 17 percent higher risk of dying than those admitted on weekdays.

While researchers said it was possible that those admitted on weekends had more severe health problems, they concluded the reason was more likely "poorer quality of care" in hospitals on weekends.

The study was presented at the European Society of Anaesthesiology's annual meeting this month.
