Suffolk classes offer tips on how to avoid falls

Suffolk has added more workshops to its popular "Staying Independent for Life" series. The free programs help older adults avoid falls by providing information on topics such as keeping your home clear of items that can cause a fall, proper footwear and exercises that can strengthen limbs and bones.

Classes are scheduled next week at Cold Spring Harbor Library (Tuesday, May 20 from 10 a.m.-noon, 631-692-6820), Babylon Public Library (Thursday, May 22 from 1-3 p.m., 631-669-1624) and Southold Town Senior Services in Mattituck (Friday, May 23 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 631-853-6472). Call to register because classes fill up quickly.

If you can't make any of these workshops, go to for a complete schedule. You also can call Suffolk's Department of Health Services at 631-853-3089 for more information.
