There are numerous complications that come with having diabetes, but one of the least recognized is hearing loss. A study by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases concluded that diabetics suffer hearing problems at twice the rate as those without the disease. Those with pre-diabetes had a 30 percent higher chance of suffering hearing problems than non-diabetics.
For those diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes, Advanced Hearing Center in Albertson is holding free seminars to discuss the link. Among the speakers will be a representative from the American Diabetes Association. The first seminar will be Thursday at 3 p.m. and will be repeated Friday at 11 a.m. at the center's office, 1176 Willis Ave. Reservations required, call 516-484-0811. Refreshments will be served.
