Operators of senior housing complexes, assisted-living centers and senior day-care facilities can receive free electronic desktop magnifiers that visually enlarge the words on bills, newspapers and personal correspondence.
The devices are a great aid to the visually impaired. Under a program administered by New York State, the units, which sell for about $3,000 each, will be supplied and installed at no charge to eligible senior facilities. About 30 facilities on Long Island have received the magnifiers under this program.
Facilities must submit an application by Sept. 15 to the state Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, which will determine eligibility. Call program unit supervisor Tracy Cooper at 518-474-9647 or send an email to Tracy.Cooper@ocfs.state.ny.us.
