Accidents slow Long Island Expressway traffic on rainy Thursday morning

An overturned tractor-trailer on the westbound Long Island Expressway in Queens caused delays and closed lanes for about three hours during Thursday's morning commute.

According to informny.com, the state Department of Transportation website, the accident between exits 29 and 27 happened at about 5:30 a.m. and closed all lanes for about two hours.

At about 7:30 a.m., one lane was reopened, and for the next hour at least two lanes were closed as crews worked to remove the vehicle.

For a short time the left lane of the eastbound LIE was closed at the accident side, according to informny.com.

All lanes were reopened to traffic by 8:30 a.m., the site reported.

It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries.

Another accident, in Suffolk County, also closed one lane of the westbound LIE near exit 51, starting at about 6:15 a.m., police said.

The lane was reopened before 7 a.m.
