All hands on deck at LIPA for Hurricane Sandy

WANTAGH - Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) crews are gearing up for storm damage as Hurricane Sandy heads toward the Northeast. Crews are stepping up tree trimming in advance of Sunday night's storm. Utility officials say they don't want a repeat of Tropical Storm Irene, which knocked out power to nearly half of LIPA's 1.1 million homes. LIPA critic Matt Cordaro says he believes this storm will be so big that it could be difficult for LIPA to recruit help from out-of-town crews. He says that could draw criticism from state regulators. Reports last year said LIPA was slow to restore power and provide customers with information, though LIPA officials say they've ramped up response and communication. LIPA Chief Michael Hervey says every employee will be on duty for the storm. Utility officials say the best way to report power outages is through the Internet or by texting your address to LIPA.News 12 Weather CenterLI Hurricane Preparedness ResourcesLIPA Storm Center
