Artie Hoerning wears three hats: He is the owner of one of Long Island's best fish markets as well as the adjoining fish restaurant--also one of Long Island's best. He's also a commercial fisherman who hooks, nets and pots some of what he sells. (His lobster pots are of his own design.)

The restaurant is modest in the extreme. Dinnerware is plastic and Styrofoam. (On the up side, you can bring your own bottle of wine; no corkage.) Menu standouts include his generous tuna tartare made with cubes of just-cut raw tuna, subtly tarragon-perfumed lobster roll, fine fried clams, pitch-perfect linguine with clam sauce, meaty grilled swordfish--and, really, whatever has just been reeled in.

The market, pleasantly ramshackle with an accretion of maritime memorabilia, always has a great assortment of super-fresh seafood and also serves as an informal gathering place for South Nassau's fishing community. It's a toss-up as to whether Artie's is a better place to buy fish, eat fish or hang out. Keep in mind: No credit cards.
