Centenarian: Gene Scala

GENE SCALA was born Aug 21, 1905, in Naples, Italy. He immigrated to America when he was 14 years old and worked as a barber and a tailor in Brooklyn. The sole survivor among his five brothers and two sisters, he has been married three times and had three children as well as one grandchild, all of whom he has outlived. He has been a musician for 70 years and has played in several bands and performed in a symphony orchestra. He still plays the saxophone and clarinet and bowls at Syosset Lanes. Gene is known as "Gene the Bowling Machine" among friends. He is "Mr. February" in the Astoria Federal Savings Bank's 2012 Calendar. He lives at The Arbors Assisted Living Community at Westbury where he celebrated his birthday with family and friends.
