Irene Walters, of Patchogue, was born April 20, 1911, in Center Moriches. She had two brothers (now deceased) and has a sister, Joan, who lives in Florida. She married George Walters and had two children, George Jr. (now deceased), and Carol Neger of Patchogue. During World War II Irene would listen to the propaganda shortwave broadcasts of Axis Sally, who would reveal names, serial numbers and home addresses of American GIs, some wounded, who had been captured by the Germans. From 1942 to 1945, she would jot down the data and write to the families to let them know their boys were alive. She has three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She enjoys reading, crosswords puzzles and saying prayers.
