Ronkonkoma man jailed after stealing cab in Wantagh with 5 inside, police say

An intoxicated man stole a taxicab with five people in it in Wantagh two hours into the new year, Nassau County police said.

The man drove a short distance before allowing the two men and three women to get out. He later abandoned the taxicab and fled on foot before being arrested, police said.

Christian N. Paz, 24, of 2024 Bodanyi Place, Ronkonkoma, was charged with second-degree robbery, driving while intoxicated and five counts of unlawful imprisonment, police said. He was to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Paz was intoxicated and in front of the Wantagh Taxi stand at 3265 Railroad Ave. about 2 a.m. Thursday when he pushed the 46-year-old driver out of the cab and took off with the passengers still inside.

He drove a short distance on Railroad Avenue to the vicinity of Sunrise Highway, where he allowed the passengers to get out, police said. Paz abandoned the taxi on Atlantic Boulevard just east of the Wantagh State Parkway and fled before being arrested on Merrick Road in Seaford, police said.

The passengers were not injured, police said.
