Nassau County removes leaning tree

After September's Tropical Storm Irene, a tree on Woodbury Road in Woodbury wound up leaning at an "almost 45-degree angle," Fred Spadafora told Watchdog in early November, adding "luckily, it hasn't fallen yet." He had already asked the Town of Oyster Bay Highway Department to come to the rescue, but was told Woodbury Road is a county road and thus not within the town's jurisdiction.

Nassau County responded quickly when Watchdog made an inquiry.

"The tree is gone," county Department of Public Works spokesman Michael Martino said in an email two days later.

The department has removed hundreds of trees in the aftermath of the storm, he said.

"Professionals assessed the health of trees throughout the county and we continue to remove trees that have been deemed a possible threat to public safety," he said. "This tree, like many others, was on a list to be removed."
