Cops: Great Neck man charged after man dies falling off car

A man who jumped on the hood of a car as it started moving after a fight was killed and the driver faces multiple charges, Nassau County police said Sunday.

According to a news release, the crash occurred about 8:45 p.m. Friday while Christian Arevalo, 19, of Great Neck was involved in a dispute with the victim.

Police said the dispute started as a verbal altercation but then became physical. Arevalo got into his mother’s 2013 Nissan Altima that was parked nearby and the other man, who police did not identify, jumped onto the hood, police said. Arevalo drove off with the victim clinging to the hood.

A short time later Arevalo got into a crash with a 2017 Cadillac sedan on Cumberland Avenue and the Altima ran into a curb, police said.

The victim — whose relationship with Arevalo was unclear — was thrown off the hood and struck his head on the pavement after he had been riding on the hood for “a couple of blocks,” a police spokesman said.

The victim suffered head, neck and spine injuries and was transported by a Nassau County police ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:39 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

Arevalo is charged with manslaughter, robbery, criminal contempt, reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead. No online arraignment information was available Sunday afternoon.
