4 arrested, charged in DWI crackdown, cops say

Four people were arrested over the weekend by authorities as part of the Suffolk County district attorney’s DWI Task Force.

Members of the Riverhead, Suffolk County, Southold and Shelter Island police departments increased enforcement in the town of Riverhead, where several checkpoints had been established.

Jonathan Trent, 26, of Riverhead, was charged under Leandra’s Law with driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child. Police said he was involved in an accident and an investigation determined he had been driving while intoxicated with a 1-year-old child in the car.

Police said Laurie Milford, 52, of Wading River, was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired.

Steven Velasquez-Perez, 19, also of Riverhead, was charged with driving while intoxicated on drugs, police said.

Also arrested and charged with DWI was Carlo Garcia, 46, of Elmhurst, police said.

The DWI enforcement details are scheduled to continue throughout the year, police said.
