After cell phone stop, cops arrest LI man on drug charges

A Central Islip man was arrested on drug charges in Hampton Bays Tuesday, after police initially stopped him for using his cell phone while driving, police said.

Jonathan M. Bowman, 28, was found in possession of 6 ounces of marijuana and 15 OxyContin pills, police said. He was charged with third degree criminal possession of controlled substance, seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of marijuana, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and prohibited use of a cell phone.

Southampton police Sgt. James Kiernan said Bowman was driving alone on Fanning Avenue about 4:30 p.m., when he was spotted by an officer. "He was pulled over for operating and using a cell phone," Kiernan said. During the investigation, "He revealed that he had marijuana in the car, and after searching the car, over six ounces of marijuana and the pills were recovered, along with packaging material and scales."

Bowman was to be held overnight for arraignment Wednesday in Southampton Justice Court.
