Hempstead police are searching for a man who attacked a gas station clerk who questioned his credit card.

The 43-year-old clerk was working at the Apple Gas Station at 797 Peninsula Blvd. when a man tried to use the fraudulent credit card about 6:20 p.m., Nassau County police said.

When the clerk asked for identification, the man demanded the credit card back and slammed the clerk to the ground behind the counter, police said.

The man sped away in a dark blue Nissan Xterra with a passenger. The passenger, a woman, was described as having long curly hair and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and beige pants.

The suspect was last seen wearing a red winter hat, a black jacket and tan pants, police said.

The clerk was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released.
