A Bay Shore man was arrested on drug and weapons charges after he bolted from a car stopped for a traffic infraction Monday afternoon in North Bay Shore, State Police said.

Police said Travis L. Austin, 25, was tracked down after he’d fled “several blocks” from the scene of the initial stop.

After being taken into custody, police said, Austin was found to be in possession of heroin and an investigation showed he also was wanted by Suffolk County police on a charge of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Austin was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest. He was held pending arraignment.

Police said Austin was the passenger in a 1996 Honda that was stopped after a trooper spotted the driver commit a traffic infraction on the northbound Sagtikos Parkway south of the exit for Pine Aire Drive. The car was stopped on North Gardiner Drive at about 1:05 p.m., police said, and during the interview with the driver Austin fled from the passenger seat.
