A Bay Shore teenager was high on drugs early Monday when he ran a red light while fleeing police and crashed into a flatbed truck, seriously injuring himself and his passenger, Suffolk County police said.

Alex Nyugen, 17, was charged with driving while his ability was impaired by drugs after the 12:19 a.m. crash on Wicks Road and Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood, police said.

Police said a patrol officer from the Third Precinct saw Nyugen in a 1999 four-door Honda Civic run the light on Wicks Road and then tried to pull him over.

But Nyugen sped off and when he tried to turn left onto Suffolk Avenue he hit a flatbed truck carrying another vehicle, police said.

Nyugen broke his hip in the crash and was taken to a hospital, police spokeswoman said. His passenger, also 17 and from Bay Shore, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, she said.

Nyugen’s arraignment information was not immediately available.

He also is charged with unlawful fleeing, and police said more charges are possible.
