Bay Shore teen shot 5 times while walking home from night school

A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot five times in the back as he walked home from night school classes at Brentwood High School Wednesday, Suffolk County police said.

Police said they have not been able to establish a motive for the shooting, which occurred near the corner of Illinois Avenue and Nebraska Avenue in Bay Shore at 10:37 p.m.

It was then, police said, that Joel Nieves, 16, of Bay Shore, was confronted by “two or three” males — at least one of whom fired shots that struck Nieves. The suspects, who were wearing dark clothing and “possibly hoodies,” according to police, then fled northbound on Illinois Avenue toward Candlewood Road.

Nieves was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where police said he was listed in critical condition. No update on his condition was immediately available Thursday.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Third Squad detectives at 631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
