Bethpage woman charged in crash that injured teen, cops say

A Bethpage woman has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident Saturday in which a 14-year-old pedestrian was struck and suffered serious head injuries, Nassau County police said.

Kaitlynn Van Alst, 23, of Green Place, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury and aggravated unlicensed operation.

According to a police report, the accident happened at 9:40 p.m., when Van Alst was driving a 2008 black Mitsubishi northbound on Hicksville Road. She struck the teenager, who was crossing west to east at Gloria Road, police said.

Van Alst fled the scene and drove to her home, police said. An investigation led detectives to her home and the discovery that she had a suspended license, police said.

The victim suffered serious head injuries and was taken to a hospital to be treated.

Van Alst’s bail was set at $250,000 cash or bond at her arraignment Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
