Politicians like Long Island Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) are pushing for strict gun control. McCarthy, whose husband was killed in a shooting on the Long Island Rail Road, says she will push to restrict assault-type weapons and high-capacity clips.

Gun advocates say that restricting guns is not the answer to stopping these tragedies, instead they say it is a mental health issue.
