A Connecticut man faces charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless endangerment after other motorists reported seeing him traveling east on the westbound Sunrise Highway, Suffolk police said.

Manuel Lucero-Corte, 50, of New Haven, was scheduled for arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Police said that “following multiple 911 calls” regarding the vehicle going the wrong way on Sunrise Highway between exits 47 and 51 in Patchogue, Suffolk Highway Patrol Officer John McCrory responded and slowed traffic to protect other westbound motorists by activating his vehicle’s emergency lights and weaving between the lanes.

As Lucero-Corte approached McCrory’s vehicle at about 5:30 a.m. the driver stopped his 2005 Jeep Liberty in the left lane at exit 51 in Patchogue and following a sobriety test, he was taken into custody, police said.
