A 36-year-old Freeport man was in custody Wednesday on charges of reckless driving and manslaughter in connection with an early Sunday crash on the Southern State Parkway that left a passenger dead, officials said.
Jonathan Sobrane was driving a white 2004 Acura that collided with a 2006 Toyota Highlander on the eastbound parkway west of Exit 17 at 3:41 a.m., on the border of West Hempstead and Malverne Park Oaks, State Police said.
A passenger in the Acura, Vito Errico, 22, of Oceanside, was killed when the car veered off the parkway following the crash — careening into a stand of trees, then hitting a utility pole, before coming to rest.
Errico was pronounced dead at the scene. Sobrane was arrested at the scene, police said.
Online court records show Sobrane was ordered held on $350,000 bond and $250,000 cash bail following his arraignment on Monday.
Police have not released additional details of the crash.
In addition to Sobrane and Errico, two others were in the Acura. The driver of the Toyota was not identified and has not been charged and police have not said what factors or evidence led to the arrest of Sobrane.
Sobrane was charged with second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving and second-degree reckless driving, police said
Police said the investigation is continuing. Police are asking that anyone who might have witnessed the crash to call investigators at 516-756-3300. All calls will remain confidential.
