A Holbrook man was charged with boating while intoxicated Saturday night off Fire Island after a Suffolk police boat had to take evasive action to avoid a collision with his 25-foot vessel, officials said Sunday.
William Lindemann, 54, was held overnight at the Third Precinct and was released on his own recognizance after arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip, Suffolk police said.
At 9:40 p.m. Saturday, an officer aboard a Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau boat patrolling in Great South Bay, North of Ocean Bay Park, Fire Island, saw a boat operating without navigation lights heading directly toward the vessel, authorities said.
The crew of the police boat put the engines in reverse to avoid a collision, activated the emergency lights and stopped the oncoming Everglades center console vessel, police said.
The boat had two other adult passengers aboard, police said, and was towed to Marine Bureau headquarters at Timber Point in Great River.
Lindemann’s next court date is August 2.
