He got away with more than $500 in cash, three cartons of Newport cigarettes and a couple of “other items,” police said.

But the man who Suffolk County police said robbed the market at the gas station on Carleton Avenue in East Islip early Monday left behind something far more valuable — surveillance footage of himself, a silver handgun tucked into his waistband, and his gray Ford Escape sport utility vehicle, which has two LED lights bolted to the hood.

Police have released that surveillance footage, asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect.

The armed robbery took place at the USA gas station at 169 Carleton Ave. at about 1:15 a.m. on Monday, police said.

Police said the suspect, who appears to be in his early 30s, about 5-foot-6 with short dark hair and “large tattoos on both forearms,” carried “what appeared to be” a silver handgun tucked into his waistband.

After robbing the store, police said, the man fled north on Carleton Avenue in the Ford Escape, believed to be a 2006 to 2009 model with dark gray bumpers and no front license plate. A photo of the vehicle released by police shows the LED lights bolted to the hood — and the visible connecting wires.

Police asked anyone with information about the suspect, the vehicle or the crime to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477. All calls will remain confidential, and callers are eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
