A drug-impaired driver who struck and seriously injured a pedestrian in Rockville Centre was arrested a short time later, Nassau County police said Tuesday.
The victim, a 27-year-old man from Brooklyn, was stuck by a vehicle Monday night as he crossed the median at Sunrise Highway and North Park Avenue in Rockville Centre, village officials said.
Police responded to the hit-and-run crash around 8 p.m., village spokeswoman Julie Scully said.
A witness gave a description of the car to police and Frank Onolfi, 28, of Spring Street in Lawrence, was arrested by county police officers at Sunrise Highway and Grand Avenue in Baldwin, Nassau County police said.
Onolfi had eight bags of a substance thought to be heroin in his car, police said. Onolfi was awaiting arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of assault, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving and driving while impaired by drugs, police said.
The unidentified victim was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside with serious head and body injuries, police said.
