Drunken driver smashes into parked car, takes off, police say

Suffolk County police said they arrested a drunken driver who smashed into a parked car and fled the scene in Port Jefferson early Saturday morning.

The driver, Stephen Bruce, 29, from Miller Place, was behind the wheel of a 2007 Nissan going west on Soundview Drive when he struck a parked car about 2:50 a.m., police said. Bruce took off but was caught by the owner of the parked car, police said.

Police arrived a short time later and placed the man under arrest, Suffolk police said.

Bruce was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.

He was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson with nonlife threatening injuries, police said.

Bruce is expected to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday, police said. It was not known if Bruce had an attorney.
