A Shirley man was drunk when he first rear-ended another vehicle and then crashed into it while trying to pass Wednesday on the William Floyd Parkway, Suffolk County police said.

Anthony Harvey, 29, is charged with driving while intoxicated after the crash at 8:11 p.m. on the parkway in Mastic Beach, near the Smith Point drawbridge, police said.

Harvey was driving a 2001 Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle south when he hit the back end of another vehicle and then collided with the same vehicle as he tried to pass it, police said.

Officers responded to a call for an overturned vehicle, and Harvey was arrested, the spokeswoman said.

Police could not say immediately if there were injuries.
