A New Hyde Park man was drunk when he drove his car into a utility pole early Sunday, critically injuring himself, Nassau County police said.

Third Squad detectives said officers responded to a call at 12:36 a.m. for a serious accident at Cherry Lane and Jericho Turnpike in New Hyde Park.

When they arrived, officers found a 2007 Toyota Camry had struck a wooden utility pole.

The driver, Andoni Ugarte, 21, “was found to be in an intoxicated condition and was suffering from multiple trauma injuries,” police said in a news release.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment and is listed in critical condition.

Ugarte is charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned when practical, police said.
