Nassau County police on Sunday identified the victim of a fatal shooting at a Valley Stream convenience store Friday.
Police said that officers responding to a 911 call found Edwin Lopez, 36, of Oceanside, at the AL Mini Mart at 91 Ocean Ave. with a gunshot wound. The shooting, which is being investigated as a homicide, occurred at 10:40 p.m., according to a news release. Lopez was taken to Franklin General Hospital where hospital staff pronounced him dead at 11:31 p.m., police said.
Relatives said Lopez was a clerk at the convenience store and that he was shot after trying to foil an attempted robbery, Newsday previously reported. Relatives said surveillance footage showed Lopez chasing after two men in the store with what appeared to be a bottle and at least one of the men fired a gun as they were leaving the store, Newsday reported.
The store is owned by Lopez’s brother, Alquimeda Lopez, who lives in a semi-attached apartment at the rear. The mourning brother told Newsday the death was a “huge loss.”
