Freeport Chase Bank nearly robbed, suspect arrested, cops say

A New Cassel man tried to rob a Freeport bank on Monday, Nassau County police said.

Harvey Rushmore, 55, of Clover Street, walked into the Chase Bank at 25 S. Main St. at about 3 p.m. and gave one of the tellers a note demanding cash, according to detectives.

The teller then backed away from the window and showed another teller the note, and Rushmore left the bank without any proceeds, according to a news release.

Police said they found Rushmore in the parking lot of the Freeport train station after notifying patrol units of the attempted robbery.

He was arrested by Freeport Village Police on a charge of third-degree attempted robbery and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
