Nassau County police said they have charged a Hempstead man with attempted murder after he and another man had a midnight shootout in Hempstead.

Police said that Darren B. Devane, 29, exchanged multiple gunshots with another person on the corner of Terrace Avenue — where Devane lives — and Bedell Street at 12:03 a.m. Sunday.

A bullet from the shootout struck the windshield of a car stopped at the traffic light at the intersection. The shot caused glass fragments to strike and cut the driver, a 32-year-old woman, in her arms and forehead, police said. She was treated for injuries at a hospital.

The other shooter fled, police said.

Police said they found Devane in his apartment building a short time later and arrested him. Devane, who public records show has multiple convictions for drug possession and felony weapon possession, had a loaded 9 mm handgun in his apartment, police said.

Devane was charged Sunday with second degree attempted murder, first degree attempted assault, second degree criminal possession of a weapon, first degree reckless endangerment, and violation of his parole.

Devane’s arraignment is scheduled for Monday at the First District Court in Hempstead.
