A would-be kidnapper grabbed a toddler from a stroller and threw the child down when the child's mother fought to save her son, Nassau police said Thursday as they asked for the public's help in the case.
The stranger accosted the 24-year-old mother and her 1-year-old son as she pushed his stroller about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday along the 500 block of Fulton Avenue in West Hempstead, police said.
The man jumped in front of the stroller and grabbed the child, but the mother struggled with him and he threw the boy to the pavement before running off, police said.
The boy's face was scraped and he also had a large bump on his forehead, police said. He was treated at a hospital and released, authorities said.
The suspect had a thin build, appeared to be 30 to 35 years old and wore a black Nike baseball cap with white lettering and a brown winter jacket, police said.
Third Precinct detectives ask anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS and said callers will remain anonymous.
