A Southampton-based animal rescue organization is asking the public for help finding Ruby, a 2-month-old kitten the group says was stolen from an adoption event in Patchogue Sunday.

The short-haired calico kitten was taken from the event held by Last Chance Animal Rescue outside a Petco at 401 Sunrise Hwy. about 2 p.m., said the group’s medical director, Paige Capace.

Capace was working at the event Sunday and said she thinks a woman who had been loitering around Ruby’s cage stole the cat.

Suffolk County police said they’re investigating the incident.

Capace said Ruby was recently rescued from a kill shelter, and is easily recognizable because of the distinct pale stripe that runs down the middle of her face.

The kitten can be returned to the Petco in Patchogue with no questions asked, Capace said. Anyone with information is asked to call the organization at 631-478-6844.

“We are devastated, and we just want her back so that we can place her with someone who we know will actually care for her,” Capace said.
