FREEPORT/Man fleeing group shot, wounded

Nassau County police are looking for a group of men who stopped a man in Freeport Saturday night, then apparently shot him as he was running away, First Squad detectives said.

According to a news release, a 22-year-old man was talking on his cell phone on N. Grove Street at about 6:27 p.m., when he was approached by several men. Police said the man was "in fear for his safety," so he pushed one of the men and ran south.

The man told police that while running away he heard gunshots and then felt a sharp pain in his lower left leg.

The victim ran to the Freeport Police Department headquarters, where he was taken to a local area hospital for treatment on a gunshot wound to his leg. He was being held for observation, police said, and was unable to provide any further descriptions of his assailants.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers, 800-244-8477. All callers will remain anonymous.
