A Lindenhurst man was one of two men arrested Thursday by New York State Police in upstate Liberty in connection with a 2008 homicide.

Scott Sherwood, 40, was arraigned before Sullivan County Court Judge Michael McGuire and ordered to Sullivan County Jail without bail. He has been charged with one count of second-degree murder in the death of Catherine Novak, 41, of upstate Narrowsburg.

He is scheduled to reappear in court Oct. 2, authorities say.

Novak was killed on Dec. 13, 2008. According to published reports, she was a former Sullivan West school board member and had died in a house fire.

Paul Novak, 45, of Palm Coast, Fla., was also arrested Thursday by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office in Florida in connection with the killing. He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of third-degree arson.

Novak appeared before a Flagler County Circuit judge , where he was remanded to the Flagler County Inmate Facility without bail. He is scheduled to reappear in Flagler County Court on Friday.

Records show that Catherine Novak co-owned a home in Narrowsburg with a man by the name of Paul Novak and they had two children.

The Sullivan County Bureau of Fire and Sullivan County district attorney's office assisted in the case. Prosecutors could not be reached Thursday and a New York State Police investigator declined to provide more details.
