Hempstead Village police are investigating after a man was beaten during a robbery attempt, then shot at, in Hempstead on Wednesday night.

The assault happened outside a home at the corner of Albemarle Avenue and Nostrand Place at about 10:30 p.m. A police spokesman said two men approached a third man and displayed a gun.

The men then searched the victim’s pockets, but didn’t find any proceeds, the spokesman said. The suspects began to strike the man with either the gun or another blunt object.

One of the suspects fired a single shot as the man left the scene, but the gunfire did not strike anything.

The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said, and no arrests have been made.
