A couple’s trip to a restaurant and ice cream parlor was anything but friendly Monday in Baldwin, the boyfriend robbed at gunpoint as his girlfriend went inside to buy food, police said.

The armed robbery took place in the parking lot of the Friendly’s on Merrick Road at 10:20 p.m., Nassau County police said. The victim, a 32-year-old man, was not injured. Neither was his girlfriend.

Police said the robber stole cash and a gold chain.

Police said the couple went to the restaurant and said the girlfriend went into the store while the boyfriend waited in the car. It was then, police said, that a man entered the back seat of the car, placed a pistol to the man’s head — and demanded his money and his gold chain. The victim complied and the robber exited, running through the parking lot toward nearby Central Avenue, police said. Moments later, police said, a white vehicle with tinted windows sped off down Central, turning onto Merrick Road and fleeing westbound. Police are not certain if the car is related to the robbery, but said the victim told them it might have been the getaway car.

The Friendly’s restaurant is just a few hundred feet east of the police department’s First Precinct.

Police ask anyone with information about the robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.

All calls will remain confidential.
