Police departments in Nassau County on Saturday arrested eleven motorists for driving while intoxicated as part of an interagency effort to curtail drinking and driving, authorities said.

The initiative, dubbed "Saturation Saturday," yielded nine arrests of intoxicated motorists by the Nassau County Police Department, one by the Hempstead Police Department and one by the Malverne Police Department, according to a Nassau County news release.

One person was also charged with criminal possession of a firearm, county officials said.

The effort was funded through Nassau County's STOP DWI program and a grant from the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.
