Who killed Ricky Ward?

Investigators are trying to determine that — and are asking anyone with information about who shot and killed Ward early Friday in Hempstead to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS of the Nassau County police homicide squad at 516-573-7788.

All calls will remain confidential.

Police said Ward, 37, of Hempstead, was fatally shot in front of 163 Elizabeth Ave. at 12:25 a.m. He was found, minutes later, by Hempstead Village police officers responding to an alert by ShotSpotter.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:36 a.m.

Police said Tuesday that Ward was walking home when he was shot and killed, but did not provide additional details.

The shooting occurred blocks from the Kennedy Memorial Park recreation center, where days earlier about 50 people attended a meeting about crime in the community — including a resurgence in gang activity.
