Newtown on many minds as BK kids return to school

Parents and students got back to their morning routine following the Newtown school shooting that killed 20 children.

BROOKLYN - The Newtown school tragedy that took the lives of 20 children and six faculty members in Connecticut on Friday is still fresh in the minds of many here in the borough, and it was evident this morning as parents dropped off their children at school.

Many parents who spoke with News 12 Brooklyn this morning talked about the different ways they've been handling the tragedy with their own children. Others said they hoped decisive action on gun violence would result from the shocking massacre.

New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott looked to reassure parents of their children's safety here in the city as they returned to their classrooms today. He posted an open letter on the Board of Education's website that reads in part, "In the wake of such an event...we have been in constant communication with the NYPD and their school safety division, whose vigilance keeps our schools safe."
