A Centereach woman was charged with drunken driving Sunday after an early morning crash in the hamlet that critically injured her passenger, Suffolk County police said.
Police said the crash happened at 3:30 a.m. on Mark Tree Road just north of School Street when Paige Reddy, 21, of Wood Road was driving a 2011 Toyota Prius north on Mark Tree Road and her vehicle struck a tree just north of School Street.
Reddy’s passenger, Matthew Borkowski, 21, of Centereach, was critically injured and admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.
Police said Reddy was also transported to the Stony Brook hospital, where she was admitted for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. She was charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at a later date, police said in a news release.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
Mark Tree Road between School Street and 57th Street had been closed for more than seven hours after the crash while authorities investigated.
