Police: Arson charge after tent set on fire with man in it

An East Meadow man faces felony arson and assault charges after setting fire to a tent in which another man was sleeping, State Police said Thursday.

Bradley E. Storey, 50, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead on charges of second-degree arson, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police said.

About 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, troopers responded to a call about a fire in the woods west of the Meadowbrook State Parkway and east of James Doolittle Boulevard, part of the Hempstead Plains Preserve in East Garden City, police said.

Troopers investigating found that Storey set fire to a tent that was being occupied by Jon Weiss, 37, after a “physical altercation involving both individuals.”

Police said Weiss woke up to find his tent on fire; he had burns on his legs and feet as he escaped the flames, police said.

He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was treated for his injuries.
