Park police detectives are investigating whether a box found on Jones Beach has human remains, authorities said Friday.
The 3-inch-by-3-inch box, found within a clear plastic bag, "contains some type of unidentifiable remains," Officer Victor Angueira of the New York State Park Police said in a statement.
The call came in Friday at about 3 p.m., when park workers told police a woman standing in the surf near the Central Mall had noticed the bag floating there.
"The woman turned the bag over to lifeguards who notified the police," Angueira said.
An initial report said the remains were those of a fetus, he said.
The remains have been turned over the Nassau County medical examiner's office for examination, Angueira said.
