A Riverhead man was arrested on assault, weapon and drug charges after he hit another man in the head and face with a glass bottle during an altercation at a bar late Saturday in Flanders, police said.
Southampton Town police said Sergio R. Mendoza-Baquiax, 23, was arrested after the attack at Ranchero Latino on Flanders Road at 11:40 p.m. He was charged with second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Arraignment details were not immediately available on Monday.
Police said that officers responding to the call about a brawl at Ranchero Latino said six “intoxicated males” were involved in a verbal dispute that “escalated into a physical altercation,” ultimately seeing Mendoza-Baquiax pick up a bottle and strike one of those involved. The victim required emergency medical treatment at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, police said. Police said the injuries were not life threatening.
Mendoza-Baquiax was arrested at the scene. None of the others involved in the incident were arrested or named.
