A Hempstead man was charged with driving while intoxicated Friday morning with two minors in his car, police said.

Charges against Nelson A. Dormes-Montoya, 32, of Jackson Street, include a count of violating Leandra’s Law, which makes it a felony on first offense to drive drunk with a passenger 15 years of age or younger in the vehicle.

Police said there were three passengers in Dormes-Montoya’s 2002 Ford Escape, including a 15-year-old female and a 5-year-old male.

He was stopped shortly 5 a.m. after he was seen driving east on Jackson Street in Hempstead against traffic and crossing double yellow lines, police said.

Dormes-Montoya is awaiting arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead.
