A Hempstead man was shot in the back as he entered his home Thursday night, Hempstead police said Friday morning.
At least three shots were fired on Broadfield Road just before 10 p.m. and one of the bullets lodged in the ribs of the victim, 22, police said.
He was taken to the hospital and was expected to survive, police said.
The shooter took off in a vehicle, and no arrest has been made, police said early Friday.
Whether it was gang related was not immediately clear, police said.
Hempstead in the past few years has endured waves of gang-related violence, from machete attacks to homicides.
Police are asking those with information about the shooting to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-24-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
