A self-employed house cleaner from Hempstead was arrested and charged with stealing jewelry from at least two homes in Garden City, Nassau County police said.

Bernabe Mejia, 45, of Dale Avenue, was arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

Garden City police arrested Mejia Sunday. Court records show she was released on $500 cash bail and is due back in court Wednesday.

Police did not indicate what type of jewelry was taken — and did not place a value on the items. A time-frame for when the thefts occurred also was not provided.

Investigators are asking that anyone who employed Mejia and may have been a victim of a similar theft to call Garden City police detectives at 516-465-4150.
