An Oceanside man was arrested early Wednesday and charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property after he and an unidentified accomplice crashed into a Rockville Centre police car while trying to escape the scene of a crime, Nassau County police said.
Jahni Robinson, 18, of Dalto Court, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, fourth-degree grand larceny and attempted petty larceny.
Nassau police said Robinson was a passenger in the getaway sport utility vehicle — a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox — that crashed into the police car after being spotted by officers responding to a call reporting an auto break-in on Broadway in Rockville Centre at 4:03 a.m. Wednesday. Robinson was arrested on Judson Place, the crash scene, while the driver ran away on foot, police said.
He is still being sought.
Police said an officer sustained minor injuries in the crash and was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.
Police said officers had responded to the scene reported in the 911 call and saw the Equinox with its headlights off.
As the officers approached the vehicle, police said it sped off and crashed into a Rockville Centre police car.
An investigation determined the Equinox had been stolen hours earlier from a location in Uniondale.
The investigation also determined that Robinson had been involved in two prior larcenies — one on Broadway and one on Morningside Drive in Westbury.
Robinson faces arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead. The search continues for the second suspect and police are ask anyone with information to call First Squad detectives at 516-573-6154. All calls will remain confidential.
